Make sure to dust off your shoulder pads, velvet tracksuits, leggings, and oversized sweaters, and travel back in time with your favorite hits of the era defined by MTV, including “I ran” (A Flock of Seagulls), “Words” (Missing Persons), and “Two Of Hearts” (Stacey Q)
Liverpool’s A Flock of Seagulls burst onto the scene in the early 80s as the New Wave genre took the music industry by storm. Their synth-laden sound and futuristic look fit the time with perfection. A Flock of Seagulls had a string of international hit singles, including “I Ran,” “Space Age Love Song,” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You),” and “The More You Live, the More You Love.” The first band signed to Jive Records, A Flock of Seagulls made an instant splash with their 1982 eponymous debut album charting at number one in Australia and number ten in the U.S. During this prolific run, the band also won a Grammy Award in 1983 for their instrumental “D.N.A.” and found similar acclaim with their follow-up LP “Listen.”
Founded in 1980 by the trio of Warren Cuccurullo, Dale Bozzio, and Terry Bozzio, the Missing Persons went on to personify the New Wave ethos between Dale’s bold, eye-catching makeup and the unique visuals of their music videos popularized by MTV. The band’s 1982 debut L.P. “Spring Session M” produced an impressive four charting singles, including “Destination Unknown,” “Words,” “Walking in L.A.,” and “Windows.” Two years later, Missing Persons would follow up with the L.P. “Rhyme & Reason” featuring “Surrender Your Heart.” which received considerable airplay on MTV, receiving high praise for its boundary-pushing visual effects designed by artist Peter Max.
After a brief stint with Synthpop outfit SSQ, Stacey Q burst onto the scene in a major way with her 1986 dance-pop rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Two of Hearts.” The hit single off her debut album, “Better Than Heaven,” reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Stacey Q also found significant success with her follow-up single “We Connect” off the same album. Her 1988 sophomore LP, “Hard Machine,” also garnered high praise, with the lead single “Don’t Make a Fool of Yourself” receiving plenty of airplay. During this period, Stacey Q’s immense popularity generated several tv appearances, including the popular 80s sitcom The “Facts of Life” where she performed “Two of Hearts.”
